King Pandukabhaya (437 B.C-367 B.C)

UnmadaChitra gave birth to her only son Pandukabhaya. A poor womanbrought him up secretly in a remote village.Chitra was in fear of her brothers who wanted to kill her son,as said in astrology.

Pandukabaya wasbrought up by the poor woman at the village of the Dwara Mandala.He studied under aBrahmin.According to the Mahawansa,he later married princess named Pali and organized an army to wage was and defeat his uncles.

Pandukabhaya defeated his uncles and established his kingdom in Anuradhapura.

Of the Paramount historical events took place during his regin were the introduction of laws relating to the administration of cities,health services and various other administrative functions.He also gave higher positions inthe government service to pepole with merits and talents.He respected educational reforms and honoured scholars.Pandukabaya also laid the foundation for the construction of cities.The people of the country highly respected King Pandukabhaya.
